Q1. What is BallotTrax?

A1. BallotTrax is a free service that enables Colorado voters to receive notifications by phone, email, or text about the status of their mail ballots, from the time their County Clerk & Recorder mails the outgoing ballot packet, to when their mailed ballot is received and counted.

Q2. How do I sign up for BallotTrax?

A2. Go to BallotTrax.coloradosos.gov. Simply enter your first name, last name, date of birth, and residential zip code to access the voter portal or to sign-up.

Q3. I’m a confidential voter. Can I use BallotTrax?

A3. No. As a confidential voter you are not included in any public voter lists, so you are not able to enroll in BallotTrax, you should contact your county election division to get updates on the status of your ballot.

Q4. I signed up to receive email messages but haven’t received any emails, what’s wrong?

A4. Check your email spam folder. You can also search your email by the sender address, noreply_ballottrax@coloradosos.gov. As it gets closer to election day your county may be receiving a large volume of ballots and it may take 1-2 days for your mail ballot to be processed.

Q5. Can I get SMS/text or voice messages instead?

A5. Yes. You can change your notification methods, turn off notifications, modify contact hours, or check the status of your mail ballot at any time (Only US phone numbers can be used for SMS/text and voice calls).

Q6. I signed up for BallotTrax text notifications and received a confirmation text. Do I have to respond yes?

A6. Yes. BallotTrax wants to make sure they have your correct mobile number and that you want to receive text messages. If you do, simply reply yes.

Q7. If I’ve gotten ballot tracking messages in the past do I need to sign up again?

A7. No. Voters previously signed up for BallotTrax do not need to re-enroll and will continue to have their ballots tracked without interruption.

Q8. Will I still get my mail ballot if I don’t sign up or opt-out?

A8. Yes. This is only a tracking system and does not change your voter registration or affect the receipt of your mail ballot in any way.

Q9. I’m unable to login. What am I doing wrong?

A9. The most common mistake is using an alias to login. Voters must login with their name, date of birth and residential zip code exactly how it appears on their voter registration.

For example, if a voter’s first name is James and the voter attempts to login as Jim, they will be denied access.

Another issue is having canceled, incomplete or inactive voter registration. Make sure your registration is active and up to date. To check your voter registration, go to www.GoVoteColorado.gov or contact your county election division.

The final reason you may have trouble signing up for BallotTrax is if you are a confidential voter. Confidential voters are not able to enroll in BallotTrax, and need to contact their county election division to get updates on the status of their ballot.

Q10. What if I don’t want to get these messages? What do I do?

A10. You can opt-out at any time. There is an unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email that you can click to remove yourself from getting further messages. Or you can login to the BallotTrax voter portal at BallotTrax.coloradosos.gov and unselect the notification methods you’re opted in for and click “Update.”

Q11. Will my ballot remain confidential?

A11. Yes. Voters’ ballot & vote remain confidential. BallotTrax provides updates to voters on the status of their mail ballot by tracking their envelope (not their ballot).

Q12. Is my voter information private?

A12. Yes. The information you provide is used only for the purpose of sending messages regarding ballot status. BallotTrax will not sell or share that information with any other person or company. Voters may opt-out at any time.

Q13. Is BallotTrax secure?

A13. The State of Colorado requires system vendors to meet rigorous security requirements. The BallotTrax system satisfies the system requirements for state vendors.

Q14. Will my email be shared, sold, or used by anyone other than the elections division?

A14. No. Your information will not be used for any other purpose except to send messages regarding your mail ballot status.

Q15. How come I haven’t gotten any more messages about my ballot yet?

A15. Messages about the status of your ballot will begin once ballots are mailed out by your county. The earliest date ballots can be mailed is 22 days before election day. You will get notifications as your ballot goes through the different stages.

Q16. Does BallotTrax update my voter registration?

A16. No. BallotTrax will not update your voter registration. To update your voter registration please go to www.GoVoteColorado.gov or contact your county election division.

Q17. I received a message stating that my ballot was undeliverable. What does this mean and what do I need to do?

A17. This means your mail ballot was returned as undeliverable by the US Postal Service. Visit www.GoVoteColorado.gov to update your voter registration and your county will mail a replacement ballot to your updated address if completed 8 days or more before election day. If you do not update your voter registration by 8 days before election day, you will need to visit a voter service & polling location to obtain a replacement ballot or vote in person.

Q18. I received a message from BallotTrax stating that my ballot was rejected. What does this mean and how do I fix it?

A18. Your mail ballot was rejected because of an issue with your signature or missing ID. Your county is mailing you a letter with instructions on how to resolve the issue by 8 days after election day to ensure your ballot is counted. You can fix the issue now if you prefer by visiting our www.GoVoteColorado.gov website and look for the heading Track or cure your ballot then click on the Cure my ballot with Txt2Cure link for instructions on how to use TXT2Cure.

Q19. Why was I notified that my ballot was rejected?

A19. You received a ballot rejection letter from your county election office, or a ballot rejection message from BallotTrax, because two election judges of different political party affiliations agreed that the signature on your reply envelope was either missing or did not match your signature on file with the County Clerk and Recorder, or you were required to and did not enclose a photocopy of an acceptable form of ID with your voted ballot.

Q20. Can I resolve the problem with my signature or missing ID so that my ballot will be counted?

A20. Yes. Colorado law requires county clerks to mail you a letter explaining why your ballot was rejected, and the steps you need to take to resolve or “cure” the problems so that your ballot will be counted. The information you need to provide is detailed in the letter from your county election office. The deadline for you to submit the necessary information is 11:59 pm MT on the eighth day after Election Day. If the eighth day falls on a state or federal holiday, the deadline moves to 11:59 MT on the following day.

Q21. Do I have to wait until I receive the rejection letter from my county clerk before I submit the additional information necessary to ensure my ballot is counted?

A21. No. You may submit the required information now, using your mobile phone and Colorado’s TXT2Cure system. Visit our www.GoVoteColorado.gov website and look for the heading Track or cure your ballot then click on the Cure my ballot with Txt2Cure for instructions on how to use TXT2Cure.

Q22. If two people in a household share an email address, can we both sign up using the same email?

A22. Yes. You will get two emails for ballot status messages in that case. The emails will contain your first and last name so you will be able to tell which voter the ballot status message is for.
