Statement from Secretary of State Jena Griswold on DOJ lawsuit on Sensitive Colorado Voter information

Denver, December 11, 2025 - Today the U.S. Department of Justice sued Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold in her official capacity as Secretary of State in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado to compel the release of sensitive, unredacted voter information. Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold has issued the following statement:

“We will not hand over Coloradans’ sensitive voting information to Donald Trump. He does not have a legal right to the information. I will continue to protect our elections and democracy, and look forward to winning this case.”

This lawsuit follows the December 1, 2025 outreach from the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. DOJ to the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office to ask the Office to enter into an agreement to share unredacted voter data, including a voter’s full name, date of birth, residential address, and complete state driver’s license number or the last four digits of their Social Security number. On Tuesday, December 2, 2025, Secretary Griswold declined that request.

It also follows the November 18, 2025 letter that Secretary Griswold led to the DOJ and U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The letter was signed by 10 Secretaries of State seeking information on DOJ and DHS’s collection and use of state voter roll data and whether the DOJ and DHS misled state officials. Neither the DOJ nor DHS replied to the questions in that letter.

The DOJ also issued a broad request to the Secretary of State’s Office on May 12, 2025, to which the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office shared publicly-available data consistent with applicable law.

Colorado is at least the 15^th state sued related to the refusal to produce statewide voter registration information or provide information regarding their voter list maintenance procedures.
