Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold Launches Primary Election Outreach Effort
Denver, February 12, 2020 – With two important primaries coming, Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold is launching an outreach effort designed to educate and engage voters. The campaign will be featured in broadcast television advertisements, radio, digital ads, and social media posts.
“Coloradans have a unique opportunity this year to have their voices heard in both a Presidential and State Primary,” said Secretary Griswold. “This outreach effort will help update Coloradans on voting procedures for each primary so they feel confident in participating. As Colorado’s Chief Election Official, I’m glad that our office will be able to provide this important resource.”
The Presidential Primary, the first in Colorado in 20 years and the first ever in which unaffiliated voters can participate, will take place on March 3, Super Tuesday. The State Primary, which will determine candidates for a number of races including U.S. Senate, will take place on June 30.
In each primary election, registered Republican and Democratic voters will receive the ballot of their party unless they choose to become unaffiliated. Unaffiliated voters will receive ballots from both major parties, but are only to return one voted ballot, unless they requested a specific party ballot by the February 3 Presidential Primary deadline or make a request by June 1 for the State Primary.
Ballots for the Presidential Primary are being sent out by county clerks this week.
This is also the first year that 17 year-olds will be able to participate in Colorado’s two primaries, provided they turn 18 by the General Election on November 3. Colorado is one of just 17 states that allow this added level of accessibility.
The outreach campaign is similar to one conducted in 2018 by Secretary of State Wayne Williams to help educate unaffiliated voters.
