Jena Griswold Sworn in as Colorado's 39th Secretary of State

DENVER, Jan. 8, 2019 -- Today, Jena Griswold was sworn in as Colorado’s 39th Secretary of State. Griswold grew up in Estes Park, Colorado in a working-class family. She was the first person in her family to go to a four-year college and then on to law school.

“I am honored to serve the people of Colorado as Secretary of State. As your Secretary of State, I will protect our elections and increase voter turnout, fight secret political spending and shine light on money in politics, and provide Colorado’s small businesses and entrepreneurs with the tools they need to succeed,” said Griswold.

Griswold was elected in November of 2018 and will serve a 4-year term. At her swearing-in, Griswold wore a white suit in honor of the suffragette movement, all of the women who have served before her, and the women across the country who are now serving their communities.

Growing up in rural Colorado, she knows first-hand how important it is for every vote to count, and for every Coloradan's voice to be heard, no matter their background or income. In electing Jena Griswold, the people of Colorado chose a leader who will protect our right to vote, fight secret political spending, improve transparency and stand up to those who try to bend the rules or break the law. Griswold’s time as the Secretary of State will be focused on these goals.

“I look forward to working with the strong team at the Department of State and Colorado’s dedicated county clerks to ensure Colorado is a national model for secure and accessible elections. We’re focused on making sure our state has a democracy all Coloradans can believe in,” continued Griswold.

Griswold has practiced international anti-corruption law, worked as a voter protection attorney, and owned her own small business. She served under John Hickenlooper as the Director of the Governors’ DC Office.

The Colorado Department of State oversees Colorado’s elections and campaign finance system; collects, secures and makes accessible a wide variety of public records; and enhances commerce.
