Secretary of State Wayne Williams takes leadership role in NASS
DENVER, July 31, 2015 - Colorado Secretary of State Wayne Williams was named co-chair of the National Association of Secretaries of State Standing Committee on Elections this week. Williams took office in January after serving four years as El Paso County Clerk & Recorder. He will serve as co-chair of the NASS elections committee along with West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie Tennant. Williams will serve until July 2016.
“Colorado’s use of technology has made us a national leader,” said Williams, who recently received the NASS IDEAS Award. “This is a great opportunity to share Colorado’s achievements with the rest of the country and to promote fair and clean elections.”
The Elections Committee is dedicated to educating and informing NASS members about state election administration practices and laws, as well as tracking proposed federal legislation and election reform proposals submitted by national organizations and Secretaries of State. This committee also follows the activities of relevant federal agencies and congressional committees.
"I am grateful to our committee leaders for sharing their expertise on issue areas of national importance to our members," remarked NASS President and Louisiana Secretary of State Tom Schedler, who named the bipartisan slate of state officials. "Together, we will pursue our recipe for success, which includes: governing with excellence, unwavering public engagement, modernizing elections, building business and economic growth and operating with accountability."
“We are proud that Secretary of State Williams has been selected for this role,” said El Paso County Clerk and Recorder Chuck Broerman. “The expertise Williams gained by running fair and clean elections in El Paso County will be as much of a benefit to NASS as he has been to us. I can’t think of another Secretary of State in the country that has as much experience administering local elections as Secretary Williams.”
Committee leadership assignments are based upon member interest and participation, as well as criteria established by NASS bylaws. Each NASS committee has bipartisan leadership, with one Democrat and one Republican appointed to serve as co-chairs. A full roster of members for each NASS committee, as well as committee descriptions, may be found on the NASS website at this link.
