Gessler releases wise raffle tips
Wise raffle tips aim to protect consumers
Denver, May 30, 2012 – Secretary of State Scott Gessler today released wise raffle tips so Coloradans can feel confident they are participating in legitimate raffles. Many Colorado charities use raffles to help youth programs, civic groups and other worthwhile organizations. Raffles can be fun as long as organizers recognize the consumer safeguards in place.
A recent story by 9 News highlighted what Colorado consumers should look for when entering a raffle.
"Coloradans deserve to know their raffle contribution is fair and goes to a worthwhile cause," Gessler said. "Unfortunately, when bad actors hold illegal raffles, their actions cast doubt on legitimate raffles."
To hold a raffle an organization must be in business for five years and licensed by the Colorado Secretary of State. Violators illegally operating outside the raffle laws may be subject to strict penalties.
Consumers can help protect themselves by following Gessler’s wise raffle tips:
- Ask for the raffle license number and research the licensee on the Secretary of State’s web site.
- If they don’t have a license, ask if you can participate in the raffle without paying for a ticket (look for "no purchase necessary").
- Ask how the raffle proceeds will benefit the organization’s mission.
- Ask if you need to be present at the drawing to win the prize.
- Know the date, time and place of the drawing and write it down for your records.
- Report any suspicious solicitations to the Secretary of State’s Office or local law enforcement authorities.
