Buescher moves forward with elections advisory commission
Proposed rule establishes Elections Best Practices and Vision Commission
Denver, April 3, 2009 – This week, Secretary of State Bernie Buescher initiated an advisory commission aimed at establishing a long-term vision for Colorado elections. Titled the Elections Best Practices and Vision Commission, Buescher stressed collaboration and building upon the state’s election successes.
“This commission will bring together diverse viewpoints with the common goal of determining and promoting best election practices in Colorado,” said Buescher. “Since the passage of HAVA, election processes have undergone significant changes. Improvements and efficiencies within those processes need to be balanced against consistency and convenience for the voters.”
Buescher proposed a departmental rule establishing the commission and its membership. The draft rule calls for between 15 and 19 members consisting of county, municipal and special district election administrators, political parties and other members of the public. The commission will meet at least two times per year.
Prior to finalizing the rule, the Secretary of State’s office will hold a public hearing on May 5 at 2:00pm. Anyone interested in attending the hearing is welcome.
