Coffman Considers SCORE Mock Election “a success”
Most issues identified from the Mock Election illustrate training needs
Denver, May 28, 2008 – Today, Secretary of State Mike Coffman released the results of the statewide voter registration system’s Mock Election. All 64 Colorado counties participated in the two-week-long mock election that simulated a primary election from start to finish. This is the first time the federally-mandated system, also known as SCORE, was fully tested.
“With the Mock Election we intentionally stressed the new system and put it through paces that simulated election processes with the hopes of exposing issues still needing to be addressed,” said Coffman. “I’m pleased that the election met the goals we set and was ultimately a success.”
According to the report, the majority of the issues identified illustrated the need for additional training for election workers. Coffman acknowledged that technical, field support has been deployed to the counties for the past month to assist with these types of issues. This summer counties will also perform additional, smaller-scale mock elections to ensure the issues identified have been corrected.
Other issues centered on system functionality and network connectivity. The state’s vendor for SCORE, Saber Government Solutions, has already begun work on a system update to address some of the functional gaps identified from the mock election. Because SCORE is an internet based system, counties are reliant upon hardware components and internet access. Some counties complained of “log-in difficulties,” “slow and jerky mouse” and other connectivity issues. In order to address these issues, Coffman retained Dynamic Research Corporation to monitor and correct connectivity issues for individual counties.
“The Mock Election allowed us to refine an action plan to address the remaining functional issues and apply a prioritized training program for the counties,” said Department of State’s Chief Information Officer Trevor Timmons. “These training resources coupled with independent performance testing will help to ensure the counties are fully prepared for the August Primary.”
