Record Number of Voter Registrations in Colorado
Early Voting and Absentee Numbers Very High
Denver, October 28, 2004 - The Colorado Secretary of State reports a record number of voter registrations in the state, reaching an all-time high of 3,114,566. As a result, Secretary of State Donetta Davidson expects a record turnout for this election The 3-million plus voters reflects an increase of 230,618 registered voters, compared to the last presidential election in 2000 when there were 2,883,948.
"I am delighted that so many people are exercising their right to vote," said Secretary Davidson. "The record registrations have been challenging for our County Clerks, in their efforts to keep their rolls current, and I know they are doing their best to make sure everyone who has registered will be on voter rolls. Electors can be assured their vote will count."
Here is how the registrations numbers break out by party affiliation:
Republican 1,125,374
Democrat 947,866
Unaffiliated 1,028,886
Libertarian 6,078
Green 5,279
Other 1,083
TOTAL 3,114,566
A more detailed analysis of registrations per county is available on the Secretary of State’s Web site, www.sos.state.co.us.
The Secretary of State expects that approximately 50 % of registered voters who vote in this election will vote early or by absentee ballot. As of Thursday, October 28, 321,278 absentee ballots have been returned and 256,114 people have taken part in early voting which ends Friday.
"With the additional new registrations, we know that Election Day will be busy as well, in spite of the early and absentee voting. Vote early in the day, at your correct precinct, and please don’t forget to take your picture ID," said Secretary Davidson.
If in the rare instance a voter’s name does not appear on registration rolls, or if they forgot their identification, or requested an absentee ballot and did not return it, they will be allowed to vote on a provisional ballot, which will be crosschecked later.
If voters have questions or concerns, they should contact their County Clerk and Recorder.
