IRS Provides Tax Relief to Victims of Colorado Storms

The IRS is providing tax relief to people and businesses impacted by the severe storms, flooding, landslides and mudslides in several Colorado counties. Counties include Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Clear Creek, El Paso, Jefferson, Larimer, Logan and Weld. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) may add more areas after it makes further assessments.

This tax relief postpones certain tax filing and payment deadlines to Dec. 2, 2013. This includes:

  • Corporations and businesses that already had a September 16 filing extension,
  • People and businesses who had an October 15 filing extension, and
  • Those with estimated tax payments for the third quarter of 2013, which would normally be due September 16.

If you or your business are located in the covered disaster area, the IRS will automatically identify you and apply this tax relief. However, if you or your business are located outside the covered disaster area, you must call the IRS disaster hotline at 866-562-5227 and request tax relief.

You can find more details, including how to amend your return to claim a disaster loss, at IRS.gov.
